How to Buy a Ceiling Fan

Below you'll find a few questions to help you find the best ceiling fan for your specific situation.

Where Will Your Fan Be Installed?

If your fan will be outside, it'll need to be UL-Wet Rated so it can hold up to the elements. A fan located in a bedroom, living or family room, office or other dry location should be UL-Dry Rated.

UL-Damp Rated fans need be used in bathrooms, laundry rooms or other areas of the house where the unit may come in contact with humidity or moisture.

How Large of a Fan Should I Buy?

The size of the fan is determined by the square footage of the room. If your room is 100 to 150 square feet, a fan with a blade span of 44 to 50 inches is recommended.

Keep in mind that the fan's blades should never hang lower than 7-feet. If  your ceiling height is 8-feet, you'll need to install the fan using a flush mount. For more detailed information, read our more extensive buyers guide HERE

How Will You Operate Your Fan?

Many fans use a pull chain that's connected directly to the motor to turn the fan and light on and off. It's also common to wire a ceiling fan directly to a wall controller, where you may have additional options such as changing the blade's speed and direction.

Remote controls have become a popular feature in recent years and they are frequently available on even the low-cost fans.

What About Airflow?

The amount of airflow a fan produces is measured in cubic feet per minute or CFM and is called the airflow rating. It is also sometimes referred to as flow rate.

Fans that have a high airflow CFM will move more air than those with a lower rating. This is by far the most effective measurement to check the efficiency of a fan.

How Does Blade Pitch Affect Performance?

The angle the blades move through the air is referred to as blade pitch. A fan's blades work much the same way as a boat's oars. The steeper the angle the oar is to the water, the more force is needed to row the boat.

So, the steeper the blade's pitch, the more air is moved. However, if the fan doesn't have a strong enough motor to handle the added strain, it may wear out sooner than expected.

Fan's with flatter pitched blades move less air even when the motor is set at a high speed. This may cause the fan to wobble or become noisy due to the strain placed on the motor.

Beware, there is more that goes into determining airflow than the pitch of a fan's blades. The aerodynamics (shape and size) of the blades, material of the blades, RPM of the spinning blades, and the overall motor power are all factors that affect airflow.
